I was already in the Santa Barbara area, running a call near Hope Ranch on a Friday evening, when a second call came in. A couple had come out of a restaurant around 9pm to find their 2007 Audi TT completely unresponsive to the fob. The remote wasn't locking or unlocking. The key warning light was sitting on the dash. They tried the blade directly in the door handle and felt resistance, like the mechanical lock hadn't been used in a long time and wasn't cooperating.

The battery was dead, which explained the remote. The mechanical lock just needed some patient work with the blade and a little lubricant before it turned cleanly. Once we had the car open, I registered the replacement key through the OBD port, confirmed the immobilizer accepted it, and they started the engine on the first try.
The dealer comparison came up on its own. They'd already called ahead of me and been quoted a wait through the weekend plus a number that made them wince. They paid a fraction of that, got home the same night, and the fob worked perfectly by the time they pulled out of the lot. When everything is stocked and you know the system, a Friday at 9pm is just another call.
