Got a call from a guy at his office in West Beach, Santa Barbara. His 2004 Audi TT's only flip key had gone down a storm drain outside the building. He watched it fall through the grate. Gone.
He was mid-product launch and could not lose a day to the dealer process. And the dealer process for a first-gen TT with all keys lost is not quick. Audi needs the VIN authorization through their system, the key blank often has to be ordered with part number 4D0837231P, and appointments run days out minimum. Then you still need a tow to get the car there. Some owners on AudiWorld report three weeks start to finish when the blank ships from Germany.
I drove out over his lunch break. Parked next to the TT, plugged my diagnostic tool into the OBD-II port, and pulled into the instrument cluster immobilizer module. On the 8N TT the immo data lives in the cluster, so that is where the key registration happens. Read the security data, generated the new Megamos 48 transponder values, cut the HU66 blade to code, and programmed the remote with FCC ID MYT8Z0837231. Tested the lock, unlock, trunk release, and panic on all four buttons. Then ignition on, watched the immobilizer light on the cluster go out, and it fired right up.
He walked back inside and made his 3pm demo. The car never left the parking spot.
