She was standing in a rental car return lot in Samarkand, Santa Barbara, early morning, about to hand back the rental and drive herself to the airport in her 2001 Audi TT. Except the TT key wasn't in her bag. She'd checked out of the hotel an hour earlier. Front desk searched the room. Nothing.

The TT uses a flip key with the transponder built into the fob body, and on an all-keys-lost job like this I needed to pull the immobilizer data from the car through the OBD port before cutting anything. That process takes time, and it has a sequence to it, but it's a known job on this generation of Audi. I read the data, generated the new key information, cut the blade on my machine right there in the lot, and programmed the fob. Then I walked every button and tested the ignition.
She returned the rental while I was still packing up. Started the TT, drove to the airport, made her flight. She texted me from the gate.
The dealer would have gotten her a key eventually. Next week. She would have missed her flight, paid to extend the rental, and still been standing in that lot.
