Worst case on a 1998 Chevrolet Astro is an all-keys-lost smart key where another locksmith already attempted the job and left the body control module throwing "service theft deterrent" errors. The theft deterrent message cleared once the BCM was reset, and the new fob learned on the first sequence. I showed the body shop team what went wrong so they'd know to warn customers if it ever came up again.

Total job was about an hour and a half, which is longer than normal. His bill was 95. The alternative was a flatbed to the dealer, a multi-day wait, and 200 or more. I carry the bench tools specifically for situations where the first approach hits a wall. The job still got done same-day, on-site.
