Do you need to tow your 1999 Chevrolet Astro to the dealer? Almost certainly not. For most Chevy models from the mid-2000s through the late 2010s, I handle all-keys-lost right at the car.
A customer in Simi Valley had his only key stop working at home late at night. His Astro was in the driveway with a push-to-start system and no fob the car would recognize. He assumed a tow was coming and started looking up tow prices and dealer hours. I told him to stay put and that I'd come to him.
I connected my Smart Pro to the OBD port and ran GM's smart key all-keys-lost procedure, which reads the body control module's security PIN and walks through the key learn from scratch. His metal key, FCC ID , was a -button proximity fob. I programmed it in his driveway at 11pm. He seemed pretty surprised it could all be done right there.
His total was about 95. The dealer would have been 200 plus the tow. There are a small number of brand-new GM platforms where my tools don't support AKL yet, and those do have to go to the dealer. But for the majority of Chevys on the road, 2005 through about 2022, I do all-keys-lost on-site every week. If your model is one of the rare exceptions, I'll tell you straight up instead of wasting your time.
