Mazda uses a transponder immobilizer system on every model since the early 2000s. On older Mazdas, it's a chip in the key head, usually a 4D63 or ID46, that communicates with a coil around the ignition. On newer push-to-start models, the smart fob uses an ID49 chip that talks wirelessly to antennas in the doors and cabin. Either way, the car won't start unless the chip sends back the correct encrypted code.
