On the push-to-start models, that means a fob housing with 4 buttons, a CR2025 battery powering the wireless signal, and an emergency metal blade tucked inside for backup entry. There's also a transponder chip the car needs to detect before the engine will start.

A stay-at-home dad at his duplex driveway near Ventura Harbor Village had a RX-8 with a cracked smart fob. The housing had split from being dropped on the concrete and the buttons were barely attached. The dealer told him the only option was a full new fob at 406. What they didn't mention is that the smart key electronics inside were still perfectly fine.
