2020 Acura RLX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How does mobile key replacement actually work for a 2020 RLX?

When you call, give me your year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the correct fob for your RLX and go over pricing before I come out. I arrive with the right key fob shell, a fresh CR2032, and the programming equipment that connects to your vehicle through the OBD port. The process involves enrolling the new fob with the vehicle's immobilizer so the car recognizes it as authorized.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you show up?

Three things: the vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, registration or title both work. I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb to verify the correct fob and confirm the vehicle is yours before I touch anything. Takes about two minutes. That's it.

Q: I have one key left for my 2020 RLX. Is all-keys-lost a harder job than just adding a spare?

It's a different process, but not one to be afraid of. When there are no working keys present, the programming sequence has to approach the vehicle security system cold, without an existing authorized fob to reference. That typically means a longer enrollment procedure and a timed security delay built into the process. On the RLX it adds time to the job compared to a simple spare-key addition. The practical advice: don't wait until that last key fails.

Q: My RLX sometimes doesn't detect the fob when I walk up to the door. Is the key going bad?

First suspect is the fob battery. A CR2032 that reads as "not dead" on a basic tester can still be too weak for reliable detection at door-handle range. Swap it fresh and test over a few days. If the issue comes back or the detection range is inconsistent even with a new cell, the next thing to check is interference. Phones, key pouches with RFID blocking material, and certain aftermarket accessories near the door can all degrade the signal.

2020 Acura RLX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Flinn Springs there's a small yoga studio with a modest lot out front. I pulled in mid-morning, and the owner of a 2020 Acura RLX was waiting by the back bumper, arms crossed, keys in hand. She had a working key already. She just needed a second one, and her dealer had given her a number that stopped the conversation cold.

She handed me the fob and watched me look it over. Five buttons, the factory fob for this car, the one with the blade tucked inside. I told her what I was doing as I went: plug into the OBD port, connect the programming tool, run through the vehicle security enrollment sequence for the new fob. The RLX uses a proximity detection system where the car is continuously scanning for an authorized fob nearby. To add a new one, you go through a handshake with the immobilizer that tells the car this fob belongs here now. It's not a button sequence in the driver seat. It takes real equipment and it takes knowing the process.

Start to finish it was about 25 minutes. I walked every function: door lock, unlock, the hatch, and then held the fob inside the cabin to confirm the push-button start recognized it. She asked if the old key still worked. I tested it. It did. Both keys, both reading clean.

She said the dealer quote felt like punishment for losing a key. I told her that's just the dealer rate. She saved a good chunk coming to me instead, and she didn't have to leave the parking lot.

Acura RLX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2020 Acura RLX somewhere for key replacement?▼

Not at all. I come to you. The whole job happens next to your car, wherever it's parked. That matters especially if you're down to zero working keys, because without a functioning fob the RLX won't start, and that means a tow if you're going the dealer route. I've done these in driveways, parking lots, and office complexes around Lakeside and out toward Flinn Springs. You stay with the vehicle the whole time.
