I got a call from a woman over in Buena Creek, Vista. She was parked near home and her X4's door handles had stopped responding. She'd done the right thing, pulled the emergency blade out of the fob, found the lock cylinder behind the door handle cover, and gotten in. Smart. But then the car started throwing a key-not-detected warning on the dash and she wasn't confident about driving it anywhere.
She told me she'd looked up my license before calling. She mentioned a guy she'd used once before who showed up in a personal car, had no markings on the vehicle, no paperwork at the end, and couldn't actually finish the job. She wasn't doing that again.
I got to her in Buena Creek with the van. First thing I did was test the fob battery. It was weak enough to cause exactly what she was describing: door handles unresponsive, range gone, but the car still willing to start if you held the fob right against the marked spot in the center console. Classic low-battery behavior on these. Replaced the battery in the fob, re-tested every function, handles responding, remote locking and unlocking working, warning gone.
The emergency blade itself was fine. I checked it while I had the fob open anyway, because sometimes the blade pivot gets stiff or the release button gets gummy if it's never been used. Hers was clean.
The whole job took maybe twenty minutes. She'd already looked up the BSIS license number online before I arrived, which I respect. Anyone can do that. It's public record and it's there for exactly this reason.
