I got a call from a homeowner up in Rolling Hills Ranch, one of those gated hillside pockets in Chula Vista where the streets wind up tight and steep. He had a 2018 BMW X4 sitting dead in his driveway. The key had stopped being recognized, and he had already burned an hour trying to get a flatbed quoted for the job. I drove the van up, buzzed in through the gate, and found the X4 right where he said it would be, driveway, nose pointed downhill, no way to push it anywhere useful.
First thing I did was rule out the battery. Fresh CR2032, reseated correctly, tested range. The car still showed a key-not-detected warning and would not wake up on approach. That told me the fob had lost its pairing, not just a dead cell.
I connected to the body electronics module through the OBD port, read the module data, and built a replacement fob on the hood of my van. Cut the emergency insert blade to match the vehicle. The whole process ran about 45 minutes on site, including walking every function: door handles, start button, locking, the works.
He asked me partway through if I needed to take the car anywhere. I told him the van carries everything. He seemed surprised. Said the dealer had already told him to have it towed in and plan for two days minimum.
Car never moved. He had a working key before I left the driveway. The dealer comparison came up at the end and he said he saved a good chunk, which was nice, but honestly the part that mattered to him was not having to figure out how to get a flatbed up that hill.
