A transmission shop in San Ysidro, right down near the border area, called me in to clean up someone else's mess.
A PT Cruiser owner had brought his car in for transmission work. While it was already there, he figured it was a good time to get a spare key made. Another locksmith showed up, started the programming sequence, and the battery sagged mid-process. The immobilizer module went into a fault state. The other tech left without finishing the job and without explaining what happened. The shop was holding a car they couldn't hand back.
I pulled up with my jump pack and clipped it on before touching anything else. Voltage-stable first, that is not negotiable on a job like this. Then I cleared the fault condition through the OBD port so the immobilizer was back in a known state, not stuck halfway through a failed handshake from the last attempt.
Once I had a clean baseline, I ran the programming sequence from scratch. The transponder key paired on the first attempt. I tested it: key in, engine starts, no warning lights, no hesitation. Then I tested it again, because on a job that already had one failure I am not handing anything over on one pass.
I walked the shop foreman through what caused the fault and why voltage matters so much on these older systems. He appreciated that. His customer got a working key, the car left under its own power, and nobody needed a flatbed to the dealer.
The job ran about an hour and a half, longer than a clean first-attempt key job, but shorter than the multi-day dealer route by a wide margin. I carry backup power and backup tools for exactly this scenario.
