I got a call from a guy over in The Bridges neighborhood of Rancho Santa Fe. He'd had a replacement remote head key made for his 2008 PT Cruiser by another locksmith about a week earlier, and the car had just left him sitting in a supermarket parking lot.
It would crank. It just would not run. He'd turn the key, the engine would catch for a second or two, then die. He tried it maybe eight times before he called me. He was convinced it was a fuel pump or some kind of electrical gremlin.
When I got there and looked at it, the symptom was pretty clear. That crank-then-stall pattern on a PT Cruiser is the immobilizer cutting the engine. The key was starting the car just long enough for the system to finish its deeper verification pass and then reject it. What he had in that remote head key was a generic chip that was close enough to pass the initial programming session but not right for this vehicle.
I confirmed what was in his existing key, programmed a new remote head key with the correct chip matched to this vehicle, and verified all four buttons on the fob. CR2032 was also weak, so that got swapped out while I had it open.
Car started clean. Buttons all worked. He stood there and turned it on and off three times just to be sure.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number I won't repeat here, but his exact words were "that's not happening." He saved a good chunk by going mobile, and this time he got a key that actually worked.
