2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last?

A properly programmed key should hold up as long as the original. The programming itself doesn't degrade. What does wear out is the physical shell. On a remote head key like the one the 2006 PT Cruiser uses, the buttons can get soft or the case can crack after years of pocket carry. When that happens, the board and blade can usually be transferred into a fresh shell without any reprogramming at all.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. We come back and fix it. Every key we make is covered under warranty. If the remote stops responding, the blade won't start the car, or anything else develops after we leave, that's our problem to solve, not yours. This is the main risk with cheap online keys or an underprepared locksmith. We test the ignition start and every remote button on site before we close the job.

Q: My PT Cruiser cranks fine but immediately stalls after I turn the key. The key is the one I've been using for years. What's going on?

That crank-and-stall pattern on a key you know is programmed points to the immobilizer, not the key itself. On the 2006 PT Cruiser, the immobilizer module communicates with the ECM to authorize the start. When that module develops a fault or loses communication, the car reads the key as unauthorized and kills the fuel and spark after the initial crank. The key didn't stop working. The module stopped trusting it.

Q: Can I program a replacement remote head key myself at home?

Not on the 2006 PT Cruiser. The transponder inside the remote head key has to be enrolled through the diagnostic port using professional equipment. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button combo that adds a new key on this vehicle. You can find threads online claiming otherwise, but those procedures either apply to earlier-generation vehicles or they flat out don't work on the immobilizer system in the 2006.

2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was in the CSUSM area, parked outside her studio between classes, and she had already done everything right before I arrived. VIN texted over, ID ready, and her one working key sitting on the front seat. She needed a spare for the PT Cruiser and had been putting it off for months.

Because she had a working key on hand, I could go straight to add-a-key without any lock decoding. I had the correct remote head key blank stocked in the van. Cut the blade to her vehicle, then used the diagnostic port to enroll the new key alongside her existing one. The immobilizer accepted both without a fight, which is not always the case on a car pushing nearly 20 years old.

I walked every function before I handed it over. Both buttons locked and unlocked the doors. The blade turned the ignition cleanly. Engine started and stayed running, which is the detail that matters most on these when the immobilizer is involved.

She was back inside before her next class started. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait time of several days just to get the appointment. She didn't say anything about price. She didn't need to.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Chrysler vehicles?▼

We match the correct hardware to your specific vehicle before we show up. For the 2006 PT Cruiser, that means a remote head key with the factory FCC ID on the fob and the right transponder chip inside. Aftermarket fobs vary a lot in quality, and the ones that cause problems are usually the budget units from online marketplaces. Some simply will not accept programming, and you won't know that until you're already on site.
