Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Chrysler vehicles?

That crank-and-stall pattern on a key you know is programmed points to the immobilizer, not the key itself. On the 2006 PT Cruiser, the immobilizer module communicates with the ECM to authorize the start. When that module develops a fault or loses communication, the car reads the key as unauthorized and kills the fuel and spark after the initial crank. The key didn't stop working. The module stopped trusting it.

This is a known failure mode on these cars, and it's worth diagnosing before you spend money on a new key that will behave exactly the same way. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button combo that adds a new key on this vehicle. You can find threads online claiming otherwise, but those procedures either apply to earlier-generation vehicles or they flat out don't work on the immobilizer system in the 2006. If you bought a blank fob online, you still need a locksmith or dealer to program it before it'll start the car.
