I took a call out of Santaluz on a Tuesday morning. The owner had a 2009 PT Cruiser that would not start, and she had already been told by someone that the immobilizer module was bad and she needed a dealer visit to sort it out.
She met me in her driveway. The car had one working key, and it was the original remote head key, beat up but intact. She said it had been acting up for weeks, starting sometimes and not others, and the remote functions had gotten flaky before the no-starts began.

I connected my tool to the OBD port anyway, pulled the security module data, checked that her key was properly enrolled, and confirmed there were no other issues sitting in memory that would explain the intermittent behavior. Everything looked clean. The module was reading the transponder correctly. The problem really had been the battery pulling just enough voltage to confuse the system.
Then I ran the full test sequence I do on every job: every button, range from about thirty feet, and three consecutive starts with the engine fully off between each one. All clean.
She had been bracing for a module replacement and a tow. What she actually needed was a fresh CR2032 and someone willing to verify the whole system before calling it done. The dealer would have had her towed in and started billing from there. I left her with a car that started reliably and a spare key discussion for down the road.
That is the job a lot of the time. Not always dramatic. Just done right.
