My key shell cracked and fell apart. Can you fix it without reprogramming everything?

Usually, yes. The remote head key on the 2010 PT Cruiser has a transponder chip and a remote board inside the shell. If both are still intact, I can transfer them into a new replacement shell without touching the programming at all. The immobilizer doesn't care about the plastic housing. It reads the chip.

Where it gets tricky is if the board cracked when the shell did, or if the blade snapped at the shoulder. In that case, a full cut-and-program is the path. Either way, I carry the shells and can assess on the spot. Don't try to glue a broken remote head key back together long-term. The blade stress point is the first thing to fail again, and a key that snaps off in the ignition is a much worse day than a cracked shell.

The transponder chip talks to the vehicle's immobilizer to authorize the start. The remote board handles the door lock, unlock, and any other remote functions. Both sides have to work for the key to be fully functional. A remote head key is different from a separate fob-and-blade setup because everything is integrated into a single key you turn in the ignition.

My 2010 PT Cruiser shows a key warning on the dash and won't start. Where do I begin?

If a fresh battery doesn't change anything and you're still getting a key-not-detected warning or a no-start, the next question is whether the key is the problem or the immobilizer module is. This matters because replacing the key solves nothing if the module has failed or lost its programming data. That's a known failure point on these PT Cruisers.

Don't let anyone throw parts at it before diagnosing. I come out, read what the system is actually saying, and work from there. A lot of owners have paid for a new key when the module was the real issue all along.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself at home?

Not on the 2010 PT Cruiser. There is no onboard self-programming sequence for the remote head key on this vehicle. Programming requires a scan tool that can access the immobilizer system and write the new key to the vehicle's memory.

So the fob you ordered online isn't wasted necessarily, but it still needs a technician with the right equipment to pair it. Bring it when you call. If it's the correct key for your vehicle, I can program it on site.

The remote buttons stopped working but the key still starts the car. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the 2010 PT Cruiser remote head key, the transponder function and the remote function run independently inside the same unit. If the key starts the car fine but the lock and unlock buttons are dead, the transponder side is healthy. The remote side is the issue.

First thing to check is the CR2032 battery. That battery powers the remote board. If it's weak or seated poorly, the buttons go dead while the start function keeps working normally. Replace the battery, make sure it's seated correctly, and retest all four buttons.

If a fresh battery doesn't bring it back, the remote board inside the key may have failed. At that point the options are a shell swap if the board can be replaced, or a new key cut and programmed. I can tell you which on site after I take a look.
