Out near the Santee Lakes Area, a Crown Victoria owner called me on a weekday morning with a problem that had been building for a week. Her key would go in, turn, and then the engine would crank and die almost immediately. She thought the car was finally giving up. It was a high-mileage unit, and she'd been half expecting something expensive.
She had already called a shop. They told her it was probably a fuel pump and quoted her accordingly. She wasn't convinced, because the engine was clearly trying to fire -- it just wouldn't stay running.
I got there and the first thing I checked was the immobilizer status. The transponder in her key wasn't reading cleanly. That crank-and-stall pattern is a classic sign: the engine gets fuel and spark, turns over, but the security system cuts it back down within a second or two because the key didn't authenticate.

She didn't need a fuel pump. She needed a key. The dealer was a few days out just for a diagnostic appointment, and the shop had already pointed her toward a part she didn't need. She was driving again before noon, for a fraction of what either of those routes would have cost her.
