I got a call from a guy parked near the Lake Poway Area, off one of the back roads where people trailer boats and horse equipment. He had his 1999 F-250 and no key. Not a dead key, not a broken key. Just gone. Said he thought he had a spare somewhere at home but wasn't sure it would work anyway because someone had given it to him and he never tested it.
Truck cranked fine when I got there. It would turn over, run for about a second, then cut off. Classic anti-theft shutoff. The engine knew something was wrong with the key signal before he even told me the story.
I had a blank that fit the truck, cut it to the door lock on site, and ran the programming sequence through the OBD port. On these older F-250s, the all-keys-lost procedure is more involved than just adding a key, but it's a known process with the right equipment. Takes longer than a simple add-a-key job, but it's not complicated once you've done a few.
Got it started on the first try after programming. He tested it himself, turned it off, started it again, just to be sure. Then he mentioned the dealer had told him to expect a long wait for an appointment and a tow if the truck wasn't drivable. I was already done by the time he said that.
He saved a good chunk, didn't tow anything, and got back to whatever he was hauling that day.
