A guy out in Del Mar Heights called me on a Tuesday afternoon. His spare key for his 2011 F-250 had quit working and he wanted it replaced before he ended up in an all-keys-lost situation with a truck that big. Smart thinking.
He'd already called the dealer. They told him to bring it in, said they'd need to order the key blank, and quoted him a number that made him pause. He figured that was just the cost of doing business with a Super Duty. He found me before he made that appointment.
I pulled up to his place with the key blank, my cutting equipment, and the programming tools. The F-250 was sitting in his parking spot and I got to work right there. Decoded the lock, cut the blade to match, then moved to programming. The transponder side and the remote functions both need to be set up on this truck, so the process is a little more involved than a basic transponder key, but it's all one job.
He stood there and watched the whole thing. Forty minutes, maybe a little under. The key turned, the truck started, the remote locked and unlocked the doors clean. He tested it himself a few times before I even said anything.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted, never moved the truck, and didn't have to schedule a drop-off or wait for a part to arrive. The dealer comparison wasn't even the point for him by the end. He just liked that it was done.
