A private jet broker called me at 6:45 in the morning from a lot near an airstrip in Rancho Santa Fe, over toward The Bridges side of town. Client arriving in two hours. E-Pace wouldn't start.
He had the fob in hand. The car wasn't responding to passive entry, wouldn't unlock, and when he got in with the emergency blade through the door lock, push-to-start did nothing. He'd already tried holding the fob to the start button, which is the right instinct, but it still wouldn't fire.
I was there in twenty-five minutes.
The 12-volt was borderline and the fob's coin cell was nearly gone. When both are weak at the same time, the immobilizer sees a valid fob but the system won't commit to authorization. Replaced the coin cell, charged the 12-volt enough to stabilize the bus, connected through the OBD port with JLR-specific tooling, re-registered the fob, and confirmed the transponder handshake.
He had the car running before 8. Every function tested before I packed up: passive entry on both front handles, start authorization, remote lock and unlock, and the emergency blade fitment.
He mentioned the dealer quoted him a tow plus a next-available appointment. That would have been days, not hours. He made his client meeting. That part wasn't my business, but it was clearly the only thing on his mind when he called.
