If the start button sees the fob but the door handles don't wake up when you approach or touch them, the key itself is almost certainly not the problem.

First thing to check is the 12V battery. A low auxiliary battery voltage is a known trigger for passive entry to behave inconsistently on these vehicles, even when the engine starts fine. If the battery is healthy and the handles are still flaky, you're looking at the antenna circuits or the passive entry system on the vehicle side. That's a diagnostic conversation, not a new key.
