There is a violin studio off Bernardo Center Drive in RB Town Center, and on a Monday afternoon a teacher there called me about her 2019 E-Pace. Her fob had started acting up over the weekend. Sometimes it unlocked the car on the first press. Sometimes she was standing at the door clicking three or four times before anything happened. That morning it stopped responding altogether.
She had already called the dealer. Thursday was the earliest they could take it. She teaches back-to-back lessons every afternoon and does the school run every morning. Four days without the car was not an option she was willing to work around.
I pulled into the studio lot that same Monday. First thing I did was open the fob and check the battery. The CR2032 inside was a generic brand and it was reading low on my meter. Replaced it with a quality cell, seated it flat, and closed the shell correctly. Tested the range. Better, but the fob was still misbehaving on the lock button when I pressed it from across the lot.
That told me the fob itself had an issue beyond the battery. I connected my programmer, pulled up the Jaguar smart key registration sequence, and got to work. New fob cut to the vehicle, enrolled to her car, and then I walked every function: door lock, door unlock, the liftgate button, and confirmed the push-button start saw the fob from the driver seat and the passenger seat. Everything worked clean.
She was back in the driver seat before her next student arrived. The dealer comparison came up only because she mentioned it. I did not need to make the point myself.
