Second, ask for a firm price on the phone for your specific vehicle. A real locksmith will ask your year, model, and whether you have any working keys. Jaguars are a specialty job. If the answer is just "we do all cars," that is a red flag. The tools required for the 2020 E-Pace are not the same tools used on a domestic vehicle from ten years ago.

Third, ask for their California BSIS license number before anyone starts work. Every locksmith operating in this state is required to have one and should give it to you on the spot without hesitation.

What exactly is a smart key and why can't any locksmith program one?

If a locksmith tells you they can handle your Jaguar but cannot describe what equipment they use, that is worth questioning before you commit.

When at least one working key is present, adding a spare is a relatively clean procedure. The system sees an authorized key, the new fob gets enrolled alongside it, done.

All-keys-lost is a different situation. With no authorized key present, the immobilizer has to be approached differently, and the process takes longer. On the 2020 E-Pace, this is still a job I handle on site in West Santee, but the time estimate goes up and the procedure is more involved than a simple add-a-key. If you have any key at all, even one with a dead fob battery, hold onto it. An apparently dead fob with a working transponder chip can still count as the working key you need to make the job faster and simpler.

My E-Pace shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What else could cause that?

A few things. The most common one people overlook is the 12V battery under the hood. When it drops below a healthy charge threshold, the passive entry system gets unreliable and throws key-not-detected warnings even when the fob is fine. Load-test the 12V before assuming the key is the problem.

Beyond that: check whether the fob battery is seated correctly and the contacts are clean and making solid contact, not just present. A slightly cocked CR2032 reads as a dead battery to the system. Also consider where you store the fob at home. Leaving it near strong RF sources can cause enough background noise to affect range and detection.
