It was a Friday around 9:30pm, and a couple came out of a spot near the Las Americas Area in San Ysidro to a 2021 Jaguar E-Pace that was showing them a key-not-detected warning on the dash and doing nothing else.
The fob had quit entirely. They had no idea the emergency blade was folded inside the fob housing, so the car felt completely inaccessible. They figured they were sitting there until Monday when the dealer opened.
I was twelve minutes out and already had the right fob blank, a fresh CR2032, and the programming tools loaded in the van. This is not me being dramatic about prep. JLR fob housings and emergency blade blanks are in labeled drawers behind my driver's seat. I do not order parts after the call comes in.
When I got there I popped the fob, swapped the battery, and tested. The battery swap alone brought back the signal but the fob still needed to be confirmed paired through the diagnostic port because it had been throwing errors long enough that the system wanted a reconfirmation. Two minutes with the tool, fob back online, proximity working at normal range, and the engine turning over on the first attempt.
Then I pulled the emergency blade, showed them where the door entry point was, and made sure they could use it if a battery ever killed the fob signal before they noticed. That part takes about ninety seconds but it matters.
They drove home that Friday night. The dealer would have been a wait until at least Monday morning and significantly more money. When the parts are already in the van, a 9:30pm Friday call runs the same as a Tuesday morning job.
