There's a stretch of Otay Mesa West where a lot of guys do side work out of their driveways, small engines, older imports, weekend projects. One of them called me on a Tuesday morning with half a key blade still sitting in his ignition cylinder.
He'd been rushing, the blade had stress fractures he hadn't noticed, and it snapped clean at the shoulder. Half in the lock, half in his hand, car not starting, and he had a parts run to make.
The extraction came first. I worked the broken piece out carefully, reading the wafers as I went. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded the cut from the lock itself and cut a fresh blade to match. The car starts through the transponder in that blade, so after cutting I ran the programming through the OBD port to register the new chip to the immobilizer. On this generation of Rio the process moves quickly, no long security countdown like you get on some other makes.
The remote fob on his ring was fine the whole time. That's the nice part about how Kia set this up in 2008: the fob is separate, so a broken blade doesn't take out your remote with it.
He was back on the road in under an hour. When I mentioned what a dealer would have quoted him, plus a tow, plus however many days it sat in their lot, he just nodded and said he already knew.
