A warehouse stocker over in Ocean View Hills called me about his 2014 Rio. He'd had another locksmith out a couple weeks before, paid for a new key, and it seemed fine at first.
Started clean every morning. By the second week it was playing games with him: the fob would lock and unlock the car no problem, but when he'd push the start button at the end of his shift, the dash would light up with a key-not-detected warning and nothing would happen. He'd try a few more times and sometimes it would catch. Sometimes he'd be standing in the Otay Mesa lot for ten minutes.
He figured the car had developed some kind of electrical issue. He'd already looked up what a dealer diagnostic visit would cost and was dreading it.
When I got there and looked at the key, the remote functions were working fine. That told me the fob's RF side was okay. The problem was what was inside. The previous locksmith had used a transponder chip that was close but not correct for this vehicle's immobilizer. On these Kia systems, a mismatched chip can pass the initial enrollment and seem fine, but over several drive cycles the security verification goes deeper and the mismatch starts showing up as intermittent failures. It's not always instant. Sometimes it takes a week of driving before it unravels.
I read the chip in the existing key, confirmed the mismatch, programmed a new key with the correct transponder, and enrolled it properly through the diagnostic port. Checked every button, walked the door handles, confirmed clean starts back to back. His old fob battery was also borderline low, which had been making the detection worse at the start button.
He'd already paid someone once and was about to pay a dealer on top of that. He paid me instead, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and left with a key that actually works.
