2013 Kia RIO
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Scam locksmiths follow a pattern that Kia owners run into more than you would expect. They quote a low number on the phone, show up, poke at the car for ten minutes, then claim they do not have the right equipment and still charge a service call. Or they give a real quote on the phone and double it once you are stranded and desperate.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. A properly programmed replacement fob for the 2013 Kia RIO communicates with the immobilizer the same way the factory fob does. Lock, unlock, and the start button all respond normally. We test every function on site before we leave. If anything is off, we sort it before handing it back. The only thing that will not carry over is remote start, and that is only relevant if your specific vehicle had that feature from the factory.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2013 Kia RIO. Can a new smart key still be made without one to start from?

All-keys-lost on this vehicle is a standard job. It takes more time than adding a spare because the system has to be reset through the diagnostic port before any new fob can be registered. The old keys get wiped from memory in that process, so if a lost fob ever turns up it will not start the car. Plan on the job taking longer than a simple add-a-key since there is a reset sequence involved.

Q: My 2013 RIO starts fine but the fob only works from a few feet away. Do I need a new key?

Probably not. Short range on a smart fob is almost always the battery. CR2032s in these fobs can measure fine on a basic battery tester but still not have enough output for normal fob range. Swap in a fresh one from a reputable brand, reseat the contacts, and test again. If range comes back, done.

2013 Kia RIO Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Fire Mountain on a Saturday night. A couple came out of a sushi spot to a 2013 Kia RIO that was not going anywhere.

The fob had died completely while they were eating. Neither of them knew the backup procedure where you hold the fob directly against the start button, which lets the vehicle read it at short range when the battery is too low for normal detection. They thought they were stuck until Monday.

I was about 15 minutes out and already had the right fob shell, a CR2032, and everything needed to reprogram in the van. When I got there, I tried the fresh battery first. The fob came back, but the vehicle had dropped it from memory during the full drain. Needed a reprogram to get it talking to the immobilizer again.

Did the reprogram at the curb. Tested all four buttons, confirmed the start button was reading the fob normally, walked both doors, and handed it back. They drove home that night.

They mentioned the dealer. I told them the dealer would have been a Monday appointment anyway. What they paid me was a fraction of that, and they were not sleeping on a friend's couch.

Kia RIO Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Kia vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services locksmith license, LCO#6792, and carries full insurance. For a 2013 Kia RIO, the smart key system requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob to the immobilizer. We have the tools and the access to do that job correctly. Kia owners on forums specifically flag this when recommending a locksmith: make sure whoever shows up can actually complete the programming, not just cut a blade.
