My key broke inside the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the tools to pull a broken blade from an ignition cylinder without damaging the cylinder itself. Once it is out, I can decode what is left of the blade or pull the key data another way and cut a replacement on site.

One thing specific to the 2015 Rio smart key: the fob body and the emergency blade are separate components. If only the blade snapped off, the electronics inside the fob housing are almost certainly fine. That means we may be able to transfer the existing transponder board into a new shell with a fresh blade, which avoids a full reprogram and saves time. If the fob body is also damaged, then we do a full cut and program on site. Either way, you are not towed, and you are not waiting on a dealer to order parts.

What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

The emergency blade is the backup. If the fob battery dies or communication drops, you pull the blade out of the fob body and use it to get into the door manually.

The key difference from a basic transponder key is that the smart key has no ignition cylinder to insert it into during normal use. The electronics do the authorization. That is also why programming requires diagnostic equipment: the vehicle's security system needs to be told to recognize a new fob, and there is no shortcut sequence that handles it.

My Kia is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I try first?

Start with the CR2032 battery. Swap it even if the fob feels like it is working sometimes. A low battery on this fob tends to cause inconsistent detection before it fails completely, so "sometimes works" is already a warning sign.

When you replace it, make sure the new cell sits flat and presses evenly against both contacts. A slightly tilted battery in this fob tray can cause the same symptoms as a dead one.

If a fresh battery does not clear it, try holding the fob directly against the start button while pressing the brake. That puts the fob close enough to use the backup inductive path and will often get you one start when the battery is critically low or the RF signal is weak.

Still nothing after that, and the problem is the fob itself, the vehicle antenna loop, or something deeper in the security system. That is a diagnosis job, not a battery swap, and that is when you call me.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2015 Rio. Can I just use it, or does it need programming?

It needs programming. An unpaired fob is just a plastic shell with a circuit board. The vehicle's security system will not recognize it until it is enrolled through the OBD port using diagnostic equipment. No button sequence, no ignition trick on the 2015 Rio smart key system.

The good news: if you already have the fob, I bring the tools to pair it on site. You are not paying for the fob again, just the programming and the emergency blade cut if yours needs one. That is usually faster than starting from scratch.

Can a locksmith do all-keys-lost on a 2015 Kia Rio, or does that have to go to the dealer?

The reason people assume this is dealer-only is that it does require professional equipment, not just a code reader. But there is nothing about this job that is restricted to a dealership. I carry what I need in the van.

All-keys-lost does take longer than a standard add-a-key because of the memory reset and the timed steps in the sequence, so plan on being with me for 30 to 45 minutes. But you end up with a working key and the old lost fobs are erased from the system so they cannot be used to start the car.
