I got a call from a guy out in San Diego Country Estates in Ramona. He had a 2022 Kia Rio and one fob, and that fob had stopped being recognized by the car. Not intermittent. Fully dead to the vehicle.
He had already replaced the battery himself. CR2032, correct type, seated fine. Still nothing. The push button would not respond, the doors would not lock from the fob, and every time he approached the car he got a key-not-detected warning on the dash. He had been using the emergency blade inside the fob just to get in, starting the car by holding the fob directly against the start button from inches away.
That last part is the tell. When a smart key can only be read at contact range, the fob transmitter is weak or the key has dropped out of the vehicle's memory, or both.
I pulled up to his place and ran diagnostics first. The fob itself was transmitting, so the hardware was alive. The issue was on the immobilizer side. The key had lost its pairing. It happens, and it can happen without the owner doing anything wrong.
I connected to the OBD port, retrieved the PIN tied to his VIN, accessed the immobilizer system, and ran the registration sequence. Then the part he watched closely: I tested every one of the four buttons from across his driveway, walked toward the car to check approach detection, and did three cold starts back to back. Every function confirmed.
He asked if I always tested that many times. I told him the testing is not extra, it is the job. Handing someone a key without confirming every function at distance is just hoping it works.
The dealer had quoted him a trip in, a wait for parts, and a price that made him pause. He called me instead, I came to him, and he was back in the car inside the hour.
