I got a call from a rideshare driver parked near Rancho Santa Fe Village. He'd already been burned once.
He'd called one of those $49 Google ads, the locksmith showed up, took his money, and left him with a key that half worked. Lock and unlock from the remote were fine. But every time he went to start the car, the dash threw a key-not-detected warning and the engine wouldn't catch. He said the first guy had been at the car for about twenty minutes and never asked him to attempt a start during the job. That told me everything. You don't know the transponder side worked until the engine actually runs.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted him just to diagnose it, let alone fix it.
