Out near the Spring Valley border in Lemon Grove, a woman called me about her 2023 Soul. She'd bought it used about a year earlier with one key. One key, no spare, and the plan to deal with that later never happened.
Then later happened all at once. The fob housing had developed a crack around the blade pivot, the kind of stress fracture you get from a key ring that's too heavy or too many drops. She forced it once too often and the blade snapped off mid-turn in the door lock. She had the fob body in her hand and the blade stuck in the cylinder.
I got there and checked the fob. The electronics and the transponder chip inside the housing were still intact. That mattered. When the chip is readable, I don't have to run a full all-keys-lost procedure, which is longer and costs more. I extracted the blade from the lock, decoded the cylinder, and cut two new replacement blades to match. I rebuilt the working electronics into a fresh fob shell, programmed both keys to the vehicle, and walked every function: lock, unlock, and the start button response.
Start to finish was right around 40 minutes. She went from zero working keys to two.
The dealer had already quoted her a number she described as "not happening." What she paid me was a fraction of that, and she didn't have to leave her neighborhood or wait a week for a parts order.
