There's a parking lot near the mosque in Lakeside Proper. I've worked out of it a few times. Good light, easy access, and the kind of place where people end up after something already went wrong.
This guy had a 2018 Soul and a story I hear more than I'd like. Another locksmith had come out, charged him full price, and left him with a key that didn't work. The car would crank. You could hear it turn over. Then it'd die inside two seconds, every time. He'd been told the module was bad. He didn't believe that, but he also didn't know what to do next.
I believed him, not the diagnosis. A crank-and-stall like that on a push-button Soul almost always points to an immobilizer enrollment that didn't finish right. The system accepts key data temporarily during programming, but if the sequence gets rushed or skipped, that data never writes to permanent memory. The car sees a stranger at the next start.
I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer registration, and found exactly what I expected -- a partial enrollment sitting in there like a half-answered question. I cleared it, ran a clean key-learning sequence with the PIN retrieved by VIN, and walked through the full registration flow the way it's supposed to go. Each step confirmed before moving to the next. When it was done, I had him press the start button. Engine on, stayed on.
He tested it twice more just to be sure. Then he asked me why the first guy had said the module was bad. I told him I couldn't speak to what someone else saw, but I could tell him what I found. He nodded and said that was a better answer than he'd gotten all week.
The dealer was never part of his plan. He just wanted the job done right the first time. The second time around, he got that.
