There is a dog beach parking lot out in Lakeside Proper that I have been to more times than I can count. Loose gravel, trucks running, dogs everywhere. It is not a bad place to do a key job, actually. Plenty of light and nobody in your way.
A guy called me from that lot on a weekday morning. He had been driving his 2014 Mazda CX-5 on one smart key since he bought it used. Two years of meaning to get a spare, never quite doing it. Then he called the dealer. The number they gave him stopped that plan immediately.
He found me online and I pulled in about twenty minutes later.
I decoded the door lock cylinder on site to get the correct cut spec without needing his original fob's blade as a reference. Cut the blade to match, assembled the new smart fob with a fresh CR2025, and connected through the OBD port to register the new fob to the immobilizer. The whole sequence, including walking every function, the door handles, the start button, the fob range from across the lot, ran about 35 minutes.
He now has a working spare. The dealer quote became just a number he mentioned in passing while his dog tried to climb into my van.
