I was called out to a duplex driveway near Berry Park in Imperial Beach on a job that should have been simple. A stay-at-home dad had dropped his CX-5 fob on the concrete and the housing had split at the seam. The two halves were held together with a rubber band when I got there.
He had already called the dealer. They quoted him a full replacement fob, programmed and cut. Their reasoning was that once a fob is physically compromised, you replace the whole thing. He was not happy about it, but he was almost ready to do it.
I popped the halves apart on the hood of the CX-5. The board inside was clean. No cracked solder points, no water damage, no signs of impact to the electronics themselves. The CR2025 was also sitting slightly cocked from the fall, which explained why the range had gotten erratic in the days before he called me.
I transferred the board into a fresh fob shell, reseated the battery correctly, and snapped everything closed. Then came the part that actually matters: testing every function. Door lock, unlock, rear liftgate, and confirming the push-button start was reading the fob normally. The cluster came up clean, no warnings.
He did not need a new key. He needed someone willing to look before replacing. The dealer wanted to swap the whole unit. I moved what was working into new plastic, and he saved a good chunk.
