A guy from Eucalyptus Hills over in Lakeside called me about his 2020 CX-5. He'd already been to the dealer, already heard the number, and decided to look for another option before committing. Smart move.
He had one working fob and wanted a backup made before something went wrong with the one he had. The CX-5 he drives every day for work, so losing that single key wasn't something he wanted to think about.
I pulled up to where he was parked off the main road. He handed me his fob and I checked it first: battery voltage was fine, all four buttons responsive, no obvious shell damage. Good fob, just the only one.
I hooked up to the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer functions, and walked through the key registration process with the new fob. The vehicle security system accepted the new key without any drama. Both fobs tested out, door handles, start button, lock and unlock, the whole sequence.
He asked what would have happened if he'd waited until the first fob died completely. That's the longer conversation: all-keys-lost takes more time and more steps than adding a spare when you still have a working key. Do it while you still have one. The dealer quote he'd gotten was for a single key, and he would have paid a good chunk more than what I charged for two.
