A photographer was out in Bonsall, near Fallbrook, on a location scout. She had one key, a single smart fob, and somewhere between the trail and the back of her CX-5 it disappeared. Not locked inside. Just gone. Lost in the field.
She called the Mazda dealer first. They told her the car would need to be towed in, that she would need to leave it for at least a day, and that the all-keys-lost procedure would take time to schedule. She had a shoot the next morning and no backup plan.

All-keys-lost on the 2017 CX-5 smart key system is a specific procedure. Because there are no working fobs left, the immobilizer has to be reset through the OBD port before any new key can be registered. That reset has a timed wait built into the process, so you cannot rush it. I ran the sequence, let the system complete its cycle, then registered the new fob and verified it at every point: door handle touch unlock on both sides, all four buttons, and a full start cycle.
She watched the whole thing from a camp chair she had pulled out of the back of the CX-5. By the time the system confirmed the new key, she had her shot list open on her phone and was already mentally back on the job.
