Over in Downtown IB, a woman had just bought a used 2022 Mazda CX-5 from a coworker. One key came with it. She called the Mazda dealer first, got a quote that made her pause, and then found me online.
She asked if the dealer number was real. I told her yes, dealers charge what they charge, and the quote wasn't wrong. But overhead is overhead, and I don't have any.

There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick on this generation. The system has to see the new key through the port, full stop.
I cut the blade to match her existing key, registered the new fob, and tested every function: lock, unlock, the liftgate release, and the panic button. Then I had her hold the fob near the start button to confirm the engine saw it correctly.
She left with two working keys and told me the spare was going straight to her sister for safekeeping. Smart call. On a single-key situation, if that one fob goes missing, you are looking at an all-keys-lost procedure, which takes longer and costs more. Having a spare changes everything.
