2002 Mitsubishi Galant Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy parked near North Broadway in Escondido. He was at a casual Mitsubishi meetup and his 2002 Galant decided it was done cooperating.
He'd already had a rough experience. A few weeks prior he called one of those suspiciously cheap locksmith ads, the kind that shows up at the top of Google with a number that goes to a call center. The tech who showed up didn't have the right equipment for the transponder system on this generation Galant, spent close to an hour, and still handed him a key that would turn the lock but not start the car. He paid for that. A lot.
So when he called me, he was skeptical right out of the gate. First thing he asked was how he could verify I was legitimate before I drove out. That's a fair question and honestly a smart one. I gave him my BSIS license number on the spot and told him to pull up the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services lookup while we were still on the phone. He did. Took him about forty-five seconds. After that, the conversation was a lot more relaxed.
When I got there, I confirmed the issue: the immobilizer wasn't recognizing the existing key. The prior locksmith had apparently made an attempt that left the system in a half-written state, which is its own kind of problem. I cleared it out, ran the full programming sequence with the key he had plus a new one he wanted cut, and verified a clean start before I packed up my gear.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him significantly more than what I charged, and that was before the botched first attempt. I didn't pile on about it. The car started, both keys worked, and he got back to the meetup.
