I was parked on the street in Downtown El Cajon, finishing up another job, when a guy walked over and asked if I did Mitsubishis. He had a 2004 Galant, one key left, and the blade on it was worn down to the point where he was wiggling it to get the ignition to catch. He wanted a spare before that last key gave out completely.
The blade situation I could see. The transponder chip inside the key head, you can't see that, but it still had to be read and matched to get the new key working. I decoded the worn blade, cut a fresh key to match, and ran the programming sequence with the one working key he had. The add-a-key relearn on this generation cooperates when you still have a good key in hand, which he did, barely.
Both keys turned, both started the car, and I had him test each one twice before I packed up. He mentioned the dealer had told him to come in and leave the car for a day. He was standing on a sidewalk in El Cajon with a working spare in about forty minutes.
The OEM versus aftermarket question never even came up. The key works. That is what matters on a twenty-year-old daily driver.
