My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard field job. I use specialized extraction tools to pull the broken piece without damaging the ignition cylinder itself.

Once it is out, I can cut a new key either from the extracted piece or from your vehicle's lock data directly. On the 2005 Galant, that also means programming the transponder chip in the new key so the immobilizer recognizes it. The blade and the chip both have to be right or the car won't start. The whole thing gets handled on site, no tow needed.

What exactly is a transponder key and how does the 2005 Galant use one?

A transponder key looks like a regular metal key but has a small electronic chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn the key, the ignition sends a signal to that chip. The 2005 Galant has no remote buttons, no fob, no proximity entry. It is strictly a turn-key setup. The security lives entirely in that chip inside the key head.

One thing that trips people up: if the plastic head cracks and the chip shifts or breaks, the key can still turn the ignition mechanically but the car won't start. It feels like a dead battery or a fuel problem. It's not. That's a chip failure, and it means a new key with a freshly programmed transponder.

My Mitsubishi won't start and the dash is showing a warning. What should I check first?

On a 2005 Galant with a transponder key, a key-not-detected or security warning at startup usually points to one of a few things: the chip inside the key head has failed, the key is not the one registered to this car, or the immobilizer system has a fault.

There is no fob battery to swap here. The transponder in this key is passive, meaning it draws power from the ignition antenna when you turn the key. So "battery" is not the fix.

Try your spare key if you have one. If the spare starts it fine, your primary key's chip is the problem. If neither key works, you're looking at a programming issue or a fault in the immobilizer itself. Either way, call me and I'll diagnose it on site in Del Mar Heights.

I only have one key for my 2005 Galant. Is that actually a problem?

Yes, and it's the kind of problem that only becomes obvious at the worst moment. Transponder keys for this generation of Galant are not something you can copy at a hardware store. A blank has to be cut to your vehicle and then the chip has to be programmed to match your immobilizer. If you lose your only key or it fails, you're looking at an all-keys-lost situation, which takes longer and costs more than adding a spare when you still have a working key in hand.

Getting a second key made while you still have the original is the simpler, faster job. I'd rather do that for you on a Tuesday afternoon in Del Mar Heights than get a call at 9pm when you're locked out with no backup.

Can I program a replacement transponder key for a 2005 Galant myself?

Not on this one. Some older vehicles have an onboard relearn sequence you can do with the ignition. The 2005 Galant is not in that category. Programming requires the right diagnostic equipment to communicate with the immobilizer and register the new key's chip. There is no button sequence or ignition-turn trick that does it.

If you bought a pre-cut key blank online, you still need a professional to program it before it will start the car.
