I was out in Kearny Mesa on a Tuesday, finishing up a different job near the auto row stretch off Convoy, when a call came in from a delivery driver who was already frustrated before he said hello.
He'd had a 2020 Nissan Kicks, SV trim, push-button start. A few weeks earlier he'd called one of those low-number Google ads and paid for a replacement smart key. The guy programmed it, took the money, and left. The car would start, but none of the four remote buttons did anything. Lock, unlock, panic -- dead. He'd been manually locking the car by hand every shift since then, which for a delivery driver running eight to ten hours a day is not a small thing.
He found me through Google Guaranteed and asked, straight up, how he'd know I was the real deal this time. Fair. I gave him my BSIS license number right on the phone and told him to pull it on the state website while we talked. He did. We kept talking.
When I got to him, I pulled up the vehicle, connected to the OBD port, and went into the Intelligent Key registration process. The fob the previous guy had programmed was in there, but only partially -- the transponder side was enrolled, the remote RF side wasn't completed. So the car saw the key for starting but the body control side never got the remote commands. Not a hardware problem. A procedure problem.
I cleared the registration, re-enrolled his fob properly, and walked every button. Lock, unlock, panic, and the trunk release all came back. I had him test the push-button start and the door handle touch unlock on both front doors before I closed anything out.
He asked what the dealer would've charged to fix the other guy's mistake. I told him the dealer would have treated it as a fresh all-keys-lost job and priced it accordingly. He just nodded. He had a delivery window in 40 minutes and made it with time to spare.
