I got a call out to De Luz on a Tuesday morning. A woman had two keys for her 2005 Xterra and one had stopped working entirely. Not just the remote, the car would not start with it at all. The other key still worked, so she was not stranded, but she wanted the dead one fixed and a proper spare made while I was there.
When I got to her driveway I started with the basics. The non-starting key had a cracked housing, and once I got it open I could see the transponder inside had shifted from an old drop. The chip was fine electrically, but the physical contact point inside the head was compromised. That is something a dealer would not tell you. They would just quote you a new key.
I cut a new key blank to her vehicle, transferred the programming using my equipment at the hood of the Xterra, and ran the remote functions through both fobs to confirm lock, unlock, and panic on each one. Took about 35 minutes total for both keys.
She mentioned the dealer had told her over the phone they would need the vehicle for most of a day and the cost was going to be significant. She had put it off for weeks because of that. Doing it in her own driveway, while she watered her garden, was a better afternoon than a waiting room would have been.
