Nissan's immobilizer system is the reason your key costs more than a house key. Every Nissan key since the mid-2000s has a transponder chip embedded in the fob or key head. When you press the start button or turn the ignition, the car sends a radio signal to that chip. If the chip answers with the right encrypted code, the engine starts. If not, the immobilizer kills fuel injection within seconds.
A retired librarian at a 55-plus community near Downtown Ib thought only the dealer could program that chip. She had a 2006 Nissan Xterra and needed a spare. Her spare was cut, programmed, and tested in about 30 minutes. Total was around $185. The technology inside the key is real, but the dealer markup on programming it isn't justified when a mobile locksmith carries the same tools.
