2006 Nissan Xterra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2006 Nissan Xterra Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy from Downtown IB walked up to me in the parking area near the water. He had his 2006 Xterra with him and a key that looked like it had been through a rough decade, because it had.

The key blade was worn, the remote buttons had that soft mushy feel from years of use, and he told me the ignition had been giving him grief for months. Wiggling, pushing, sometimes a full steering-wheel jiggle just to get it to turn. He had already called the dealer and gotten a quote for a new ignition cylinder plus a new key plus programming. He said it out loud twice, like he was still processing it.

I looked at the ignition before touching anything. The cylinder itself was not the problem. The internal wafers had worn down to the point where the key was not catching them cleanly anymore. That is a repair job, not a replacement job.

I decoded the lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key blade matched to the repaired cylinder. Before I did any of that mechanical work, I backed up the immobilizer data so the remote portion of his new key could be paired back up without losing anything. The remote side paired correctly, and I walked every function: lock, unlock, and the panic button, all at normal range.

He watched the whole thing from about four feet away. When the ignition turned on the first try with no wiggle, no jiggle, no ceremony at all, he just nodded slowly like he was recalibrating his expectations.

The dealer wanted to replace a part that did not need replacing. I repaired what was actually worn and had him driving again in under an hour, for a fraction of what they quoted.
