2012 Nissan Xterra Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Berry Park in Imperial Beach on a Tuesday morning. A guy flagged me down in a parking lot off Coronado Avenue before I even finished parking my van.
He had a 2012 Xterra, one key, and his wife had taken it through a full wash cycle in a jacket pocket over the weekend. The fob looked fine on the outside. Dried out, he figured. Popped a fresh CR1620 in it. Nothing.
He had already called the dealer. Parts had to be ordered. Appointment was Thursday at the earliest, and that was if the part came in on time, which the service advisor said was not guaranteed.
I pulled out my programmer, connected to the OBD port, and read the vehicle. The immobilizer had the old key registered but it had also flagged repeated failed attempts, probably from him clicking the dead fob hoping it would come back to life. That kind of thing does not fix itself.
Cut a new key blade to the vehicle, programmed the new remote-head key, cleared the failed-attempt history from the system, and walked him through a button check on the hood of his truck. Lock, unlock, panic, all confirmed.
He asked how long that took. I told him about twenty-five minutes of actual work. He said the dealer quoted him the better part of a week when you counted parts shipping. He saved a good chunk and kept his truck on the road the same day he called.
That part about the wife, though. He was still working through that one.
