Do I need to bring my 2008 Nissan Xterra somewhere for key replacement?

Not always. On a remote-head key, the transponder and the remote are in the same housing but they run independently. If the truck starts, the transponder side is healthy. Dead remote functions on a working key usually point to one of three things: a dead CR1620, a battery contact that got bent when someone pried the case open, or a fob that fell hard enough to crack the circuit board inside.

Start with a fresh CR1620 and check that the contacts are sitting flat against the cell. If range is still bad after that, or buttons are intermittent, the fob itself is the problem. I can replace the remote-head unit and program it to your vehicle without touching anything on the transponder enrollment side, since the truck already knows a key exists.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2008 Xterra. Can I program it myself?

The remote buttons on these can sometimes be synced through an onboard sequence if you still have a working key to start the process. The transponder side is a different story. That requires professional programming equipment connected to the OBD port. An unprogrammed transponder means the immobilizer won't release and the engine won't run, even if the key blade is cut perfectly.
