A Bonneville owner in Bancroft, Spring Valley, called me on a Tuesday afternoon. Her fob had been getting flaky for a couple of weeks, lock and unlock range shrinking, then the trunk release stopped responding entirely, then one morning it just stopped doing anything at all.
She had already tried a new CR2032 from the drugstore. Still nothing. Figured the fob was done.
I pulled up and popped the fob open right on her hood. The battery she had installed was seated fine, but the contact tabs were slightly spread from whoever had pried it open before. The contacts were barely kissing the cell. Quick bend back, clean wipe on the battery terminals, fresh CR2032 seated correctly and snapped shut.
Still nothing on button press. So we moved to the next step. With a working fob you can do the onboard relearn on these without any scan tool. Cycle the door locks a specific number of times, get into program mode, press a button on the fob, and the body control module accepts it. Took about four minutes standing next to her car in the driveway.
All four buttons came back. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. She tested the trunk release twice because that was the first one to quit on her.
The whole call was short. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her just to look at it, and she would have needed a tow since she was not confident driving it without knowing what else might be wrong. I was already there, already done, and she had a working fob again before she needed to leave for pickup.
