1999 Pontiac Bonneville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is the difference between the fob and the ignition key on this car?

They work together but they do different jobs. The fob is your remote, handling lock, unlock, trunk, and panic over a radio signal. The ignition key is a separate metal key that also carries a transponder chip inside the head. When you turn it in the cylinder, the immobilizer reads that chip. If the chip isn't recognized, the engine won't run even if the key blade physically turns.

Q: Do I need to be present for the whole appointment?

For the start and finish, yes. I verify ownership with your ID and registration before anything gets touched. After that you don't need to hover over me. When the key and fob are ready, we test everything together so you can see it working before we close out.

Q: I bought a used fob online. Can you program it to my 1999 Bonneville?

Probably, with one thing to check first. The fob needs to match the factory FCC ID on the label for your Bonneville. Late-90s GM produced a few different fob variants across their full-size lineup and they are not all cross-compatible, even when they look nearly identical. If you confirm the factory FCC ID on your existing fob matches what's printed on the replacement, you're in good shape. Bring both when I come out.

Q: The fob worked fine and now it does nothing even after a new battery. What happened?

A few possibilities. On late-90s GM fobs, the battery contacts inside the housing can corrode or lose tension over time, so even a fresh CR2032 doesn't make a solid connection. Open the fob and look at the contact clips. If they look dull or slightly green, clean them with a dry cloth and press the clips inward slightly to restore tension before assuming the fob is dead.

1999 Pontiac Bonneville Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy out in Peutz Valley called me about his 1999 Bonneville. He said the fob had been getting flaky for a few weeks, range was shrinking, and then one morning nothing worked at all. He was still able to get in with the key blade and start the car, so at least he wasn't stranded.

When I got there he had already bought a replacement fob online, which I see all the time. He figured he'd just swap it and be done. The fob was correct for his vehicle, so that part worked out in his favor.

I popped in a fresh CR2032, walked him through what the programming sequence actually involves on a vehicle this age, and got the new fob enrolled. Then I went through all four buttons at the car, standing at each door, testing the trunk release, running the panic. Everything came up clean.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause, plus they wanted him to schedule it out a few days. He found me instead, and we had the whole thing sorted in his driveway in about 25 minutes. He was back inside before his coffee got cold.

Pontiac Bonneville Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 1999 Pontiac Bonneville fob have?▼

Four buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk release, and panic. All four get tested during the programming visit before I leave your location. If any button feels soft or unresponsive, that's usually a worn contact pad inside the fob housing, not a programming issue, and it's worth knowing before we wrap up.
