2000 Pontiac Bonneville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is the FCC ID for the 2000 Pontiac Bonneville key?

This vehicle uses a transponder key, not a fob, so there's no FCC ID that applies to the ignition key itself. FCC IDs are for radio-frequency remotes. If you have a separate remote entry device for your Bonneville, the factory FCC ID would be printed on the back of that remote. But for the key that starts the car, what matters is the transponder chip inside it and the key blade cut to your locks.

Q: Do I need to bring my 2000 Pontiac Bonneville somewhere to get a key made?

No. I come to you. Home, driveway, parking lot, wherever the car is sitting. The mobile unit carries the cutting equipment and programming tools for these. Transponder programming on a 2000 Bonneville doesn't require a dealership bay or a shop lift. It gets done at the OBD port, right in your vehicle, in about 20 to 30 minutes. No tow, no waiting room, no appointment three days out.

Q: My 2000 Bonneville starts and immediately stalls. Could it be the key?

That's a classic sign that the immobilizer is involved. The engine fires mechanically, the immobilizer doesn't see a valid chip signal, and it shuts things down within a second or two. It's easy to misread as a fuel or ignition problem because the crank sounds completely normal. Common causes on these: a transponder key that's damaged or delaminated inside the head, a hardware-store copy with no chip at all, or a key that lost its programming.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2000 Bonneville. Is all-keys-lost harder on this car?

It's more involved than a spare-key job, but it's absolutely doable. When there's no working key to reference, I decode the lock mechanically to establish the correct cut, then produce a new key blade matched to your vehicle. From there the transponder gets programmed to the car. The reason to avoid getting to this point is that decoding adds time and the procedure is longer than a simple add-a-key.

2000 Pontiac Bonneville Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy over in La Mesa Village called me about a 2000 Bonneville that cranked fine but died every single time before it caught. He'd already been to a shop. They told him it was probably a fuel pressure problem and quoted him a diagnostic fee before they'd even hook anything up.

I got there and asked him one question: did this start right after he got a key copied at a hardware kiosk? Long pause. Yeah, it did.

The copy looked perfect. Same blade, same cuts, same black plastic head. But there was no transponder chip inside, just solid plastic. The original had gone missing a few weeks before, so he was running on the copy alone. The car was cranking on the mechanical side just fine and the immobilizer was shutting it down every time because it wasn't seeing any chip signal at all.

I cut a proper replacement key, programmed the transponder to the vehicle right there in his driveway, and the Bonneville started and held on the first try. He stood there for a second watching the idle settle like he was waiting for it to die again out of habit.

The shop visit would have gone nowhere. The dealer route would have taken days and cost him a lot more. Thirty minutes in La Mesa Village, and he was back on the road.

Does the 2000 Pontiac Bonneville key have a remote or fob?▼

Not as part of the key itself. The 2000 Bonneville uses a transponder key: a standard-looking metal key with a chip embedded in the plastic head. It turns in the ignition cylinder. There is no remote, no lock or unlock buttons, and no battery to replace. If your Bonneville has a separate remote entry fob, that's an add-on or aftermarket piece and it operates independently from the ignition key.
