Out in Nestor, a guy had the Bonneville sitting in his driveway and one key left to his name. He'd lost the other one months back and kept putting off the replacement. Then his remaining key stopped starting the car.
He turned it, the engine fired, and it stalled within two seconds. Every time. The blade was fine, the battery was fine. He figured it was a fuel issue and called a mechanic first.
When he finally called me, I knew what it sounded like before I pulled up. That start-then-stall is the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder. The chip in his key had given up. Looked fine from the outside, just a normal black plastic key head, nothing obviously wrong.
I programmed a replacement key on site, confirmed the immobilizer accepted it, and the car started and stayed running like nothing had ever happened. His one remaining original key also got checked while I was there. Still technically worked, but I wouldn't have bet on it lasting another month.
He'd spent two weeks convinced it was an engine problem. It was a key the whole time.
