2005 Pontiac Bonneville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a transponder key and why won't my Bonneville start without the right one?

The transponder key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn the key, the immobilizer reads that chip. If it recognizes the code, it allows the engine to run. If it doesn't, the car may crank or even fire briefly and then stall. A key cut from the wrong blank, or a correctly cut key with an unprogrammed chip, will do exactly that. The blade opens the ignition, but the car won't stay running.

Q: Do I need to be there for the whole job?

Just the start and the finish. I check your ID and registration before touching anything, then you can step inside while I work. When the key is ready I'll get you to test it yourself so you know it starts and runs. Takes maybe 20 to 30 minutes depending on the situation.

Q: I have one working key for my 2005 Bonneville. Can I get a spare made before I lose it completely?

Yes, and this is exactly the right time to do it. With one working key still in hand, there's a good chance an onboard relearn sequence can be used to add a second key without pulling out heavy diagnostic equipment. It's faster and simpler than an all-keys-lost job. Once you're down to zero working keys, that path closes.

Q: My Bonneville starts and immediately stalls. Is that the key or something else?

Start-then-stall on these points straight at an anti-theft issue until proven otherwise. The immobilizer cuts fuel or ignition within a couple of seconds if it doesn't see a valid transponder signal. Could be a worn or failing chip in your key, a key that was copied without proper programming, or occasionally a fault in the immobilizer itself. Worth ruling out the key first since that's the simplest fix.

2005 Pontiac Bonneville Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Nestor, a guy had the Bonneville sitting in his driveway and one key left to his name. He'd lost the other one months back and kept putting off the replacement. Then his remaining key stopped starting the car.

He turned it, the engine fired, and it stalled within two seconds. Every time. The blade was fine, the battery was fine. He figured it was a fuel issue and called a mechanic first.

When he finally called me, I knew what it sounded like before I pulled up. That start-then-stall is the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder. The chip in his key had given up. Looked fine from the outside, just a normal black plastic key head, nothing obviously wrong.

I programmed a replacement key on site, confirmed the immobilizer accepted it, and the car started and stayed running like nothing had ever happened. His one remaining original key also got checked while I was there. Still technically worked, but I wouldn't have bet on it lasting another month.

He'd spent two weeks convinced it was an engine problem. It was a key the whole time.

Pontiac Bonneville Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2005 Pontiac Bonneville key have remote buttons built in?▼

No. The standard key for this vehicle is a transponder key, which means it's a key with a chip in the head and a blade that goes into the ignition. No lock, unlock, or trunk buttons on the key itself. If you want remote functions, that's handled by a separate key fob that works independently from the ignition key. When we replace the transponder key, we're programming the chip so the car will start, not setting up remote functions.
