1996 Pontiac Grand Am
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

1996 Pontiac Grand Am Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy over in Bear Valley, Escondido. He'd been locked out of his 1996 Grand Am for a few hours before he found us. Said he called the dealer first out of habit, and they told him to tow it in and wait. He didn't want to pay for a tow on a car that was sitting in his own driveway.

When I pulled up, he was standing next to it looking at it like it had personally wronged him.

The key had snapped. Not the fancy kind of problem, just metal fatigue from years of use. Half of it was still in his pocket and the other half was somewhere inside the lock cylinder. First order of business was extracting the broken piece without damaging the cylinder. That part takes patience, not speed.

Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded it on the spot, cut a replacement blade to match, and tested it in both the door and the ignition. Fit clean. Turned smooth.

He asked me if I needed to "plug anything in." I told him no, this one's all mechanical. He seemed almost suspicious, like there had to be more to it.

There wasn't. Key in hand, car accessible, done before he finished his coffee. The dealer route would have cost him a tow and most of a week. He saved a good chunk and didn't go anywhere.
