1999 Pontiac Grand Am
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know if the fob I found online will actually work with my 1999 Grand Am?

Check the factory FCC ID printed on the back of your original fob and match it to what the seller lists. If those match, the hardware should be compatible. But buying a fob online only gets you halfway there -- it still has to be programmed to your specific vehicle before it will do anything. An unprogrammed fob is just plastic. We verify compatibility before we program and test range after, so you are not guessing.

Q: Are you licensed and insured to do this work in California?

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, fully insured, and bonded. We are also BBB A+ rated and part of Google's Guaranteed program, which you can verify directly through Google. That last one matters because Google does their own background check before they let anyone carry that badge. You can look all of this up before you call.

Q: My 1999 Grand Am starts fine but then immediately stalls. Is this a key problem?

That pattern -- cranks, fires, dies within a second or two -- points to the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder chip in the key. It is different from a dead fob. The remote and the immobilizer are separate systems on this car. The fob handles the doors and trunk wirelessly. The chip inside the key itself handles engine authorization. If the car is stalling out right after start, that is what I diagnose and handle on site.

Q: Can I program a replacement fob for my 1999 Grand Am myself?

On this generation, there is an onboard procedure that works without external equipment. It runs through the ignition. So yes, it is technically possible to do yourself if you follow the sequence correctly. Where people run into trouble is when a battery died mid-process, when they have the wrong fob, or when the procedure does not take and they are not sure why. If you tried it and it did not work, that is a normal call for us.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone over in Del Mar Heights on a Saturday afternoon. She had a 1999 Grand Am sitting in her driveway, one working key, and a fob that had stopped responding about three weeks earlier. She had been living with it, doing everything manually, until she finally decided it was worth fixing.

When I pulled up she handed me the fob and said it was probably just the battery. She had already swapped the CR2032 herself. New battery, clean contacts, still nothing. That changes the call a little.

I went through the onboard relearn sequence right there in the driveway. No OBD tool needed for the fob on these -- the procedure runs through the ignition. Got through the sequence, tested all four buttons, and everything came back. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Full function.

She stood there looking at it like she expected it to stop working again. I walked her through what actually happened: the fob had lost its pairing, which can happen when the battery goes completely dead before it gets swapped. New battery alone does not restore the link. The relearn does.

The whole visit was maybe 25 minutes including the drive. She had already called the dealer earlier that week and they quoted her several days out plus the tow since she only had the one key. That comparison came up naturally. I did not bring it up.

Pontiac Grand Am Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What battery does the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am key fob use?▼

CR2032. Easy to find at any drugstore or hardware store. One thing worth knowing: if you let the battery die completely before swapping it, the fob can lose its pairing with the car. A fresh CR2032 is the right first move, but if the buttons still do nothing after the swap, the fob needs to be relearned to the vehicle. That is a separate step and it does not happen automatically just because the battery is new.
